DUI Penalties in Illinois
Defense from a Normal & Bloomington DUI Lawyer
Each year, thousands of individuals are arrested for drunk driving throughout
Illinois. Those who are convicted do not go unpunished and many are left
to deal with the consequences for years. You may be facing similar circumstances,
but rest assured that there is hope for your future.
Johnson Law Group brings nearly 100 years of shared experience to each
and every case. We take our clients’ concerns seriously and devote
ourselves to resolving their cases as favorably as possible. While DUI
penalties are harsh, preventing them is not impossible. Doing so starts
with retaining a Normal & Bloomington
DUI attorney from our talented legal team.
How are convicted offenders punished?
There are a number of different factors that play into DUI penalties –
the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC), any prior convictions,
and whether anyone was injured by the offense. Prior DUI convictions do
count against drivers in Illinois, even if they occurred 20 years ago,
and can make the penalties significantly more severe.
For a first offense, penalties can include:
- Up to one year in jail
- Up to $2,500 in fines
- License suspension for a minimum of one year
- Mandatory interlock ignition device (IID)
Offenders may also be required to attend alcohol abuse counseling and pay
additional fines to have their license reinstated. These penalties can
make it difficult to fulfil necessary obligations, such as going to work
each day, and are often much more costly than offenders realize.
