In October 2013, a man's pickup truck struck a police car in the median of South Carolina's Interstate 55, killing a police officer and his K-9 companion. The man was charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence, and awaits his pre-trial hearing.
In a recent hearing, the man's defense attorney argued that the trial should be moved outside of Livingston County, where the accident took place. He cited extensive media coverage and small poll as evidence that the jury was predisposed to a bias.
Judge Robert Travers ruled against this motion, stating that the poll referenced by the attorney was neither sufficient in scope nor professional in execution. As a result, the trial is to remain in Livingston County unless the jury selected for the trial proves biased against the man.
